I worked at Tower Records in Ann Arbor for a couple of years before grad school. We had several celebrity spottings there:
Peter Buck of REM came in once, everyone was too intimidated to go talk to him, so I finally asked him if he needed help. He didn't. Patti Smith came in and sat quietly in the book section for about an hour, reading poetry. She was pleasant when approached, but would only talk about Dylan's new album! One of the Baldwin brothers (I forget which one) came in and seemed intent on making sure the entire store knew who he was. We also had bands come in fairly often to play live in the store or sign cd's. Most of these were up and coming bands, not too famous. Lots of bands would do 'walk throughs'-show up at the store unannounced with a record label rep and hang out for a few minutes with the staff in the backroom. I met They Might Be Giants, Rusted Root, Kid Rock (he was a total asshole), Evan Dando of the Lemonheads, the Kronos Quartet, Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Jonatha Brooke (I had no idea who she was, and thought her name was a typo-actually Jonathan Brooks) , and many others I can't recall through these visits. I also knew a guy who worked security at U-M stadium. One day he was told not to let anyone come into the broadcast booth, and was verbally assaulted by an irate Candace Bergen when he woulden't let her in! So Ann Arbor does get the occasional celeb spotting! ------------- RE: That is so cool. Too bad more celebs don't live in Ann Arbor. I shop at Whole Foods all the time but I don't think it'll provoke any encounters with the famed kind. Listen to your Yahoo! Mail messages from any phone. http://phone.yahoo.com
