thanks walt - its great to see that medicine is getting to grips with aids.

ive just been watching a documentary on tv regarding justice edwin cameron, a very
highly regarded supreme court of appeal judge, who has had full blown aids since, i
think, mid 1997. he wrestled for many years before public announcement of his illness,
and since doing so has been a major inspiration for many, many people suffering from
aids, as well as communicating many truths to those who do not.

in the years before the public announcement, he worked closely with a local tv
station, producing a documentary on his life with aids. at that stage the plan was to
release it after his death. he has since decided to release it now, and tonight was
the first public screening. it will be posted on the tv stations website tomorrow, and
those who are interested can view it at:

and a transcript of the full, uncut interview appears at:

he has been on a treatment of combivir (AZT + 3TC)(no - i dont have a clue what that
means!!) and nivaripine twice a day, at a monthly cost of around 680 rand
(approximately 75 us dollars) and is apparently in great health.

the programme was flighted in response to the south african governments decision to
not make the combivir treatment generally available through govt. health schemes due
to the "toxic" nature of the side effects - diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy!!!! - no
concern about the fact that it is apparently capable of keeping people alive!!!!
