I knew that - I was just havin' fun with ya! > But I think her writing reflects that Christmas is > just one more thing that doesn't live up to the > hype. > > Why else would she throw the Christmas reference > into "Chinese Cafe", except to set up the contrast > of the supposed joy of the season against her own > melancholia? > I agree. And River is the ultimate Christmas downer (in a way). "It's coming on Christmas/They're cutting down trees/ They're putting up reindeer/ And singing songs of joy and peace/ Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on..." It's not about the wonderful Christmas tree and how pretty it is - it's about cutting down trees. And putting up reindeer? Sounds like maybe they're being crucified! (Maybe I'm going too far with that - depends on what kind of a mood I'm in at the time!) There's also kind of a bitterness in her voice when she sings that song - and then, she wants to just skate away from it all. Jeez, what a great song for bringing out the melancholy! The other day, they were playing something they call disc-lexia on one of our local radio stations, and they played Robert Downey Jr's version of River - when he sings "they're cutting down trees", it really sounds like "they're cutting down cheese!" which kind of ruins the mood - however, if you have a sick sense of humour, it works. ______________________________________________________ Send your holiday cheer with http://greetings.yahoo.ca
