Hi, all,

I was chatting with another jmdler the other day, and we got talking about
musical heroes, and he was intrigued to hear mine (in addition to Joni, the
first-stringers are Laura Nyro, Burt Bacharach and Jimmy Webb -- all of whom
stretched boundaries or broke rules in their own way; there's like a 17-way
tie for fifth place at the moment...I can't decide between Jane Siberry RLJ,
Peter Gabriel, Sting and 13 others...)

Anyway, I was amused when watching Airplane II the other day, in a scene
where two guys got on an elevator where in which there was playing "elevator
music" (thank god, I don't think they do that anymore on elevators -- people
just havbe to look at the numbers going up, or look at their shoes) -- Webb's
MacArthur Park as they got on, and Bacharach's Raindrops as they got off. It
could just as well have been Both Sides Now and Stoney End. :-) As I said,
thank god they don't so this anymore on elevators -- in fact, the practice of
removing all energy and style from music for this kind of purpose seems to
have all but disappeared -- where there is musack to he beard, they seem more
likely now to play the originals -- or am I wrong?

Walt
