It's very interesting how Joni's twisting terms (lyrics if you like) from NRH in TI.
The launderies and Magdalene in TI are not at all what they seemed to be in When All
The Slave Are Free. In TI they stand for being a woman captive in a prison - in NRH
the both the woman and the 'Washing on a line' stand for being saved and for being
thrilled by a presence of a healer.
Sunday - In NRH's "Two Grey Rooms" sunday is a day for the lover in the song to pass
away untill his loved one walks by - but in 'Sunny Sunday' - it's "just another sunny
sunday" that'll be followed by "just another sunny monday" and the only waiting is for
the "night to fall".
The Cadilac - This is realy a special one. I mean, notice that there's always a car in
a Joni album. (I may be wrong, but i'm running Joni's albums in my head and by now i
found a car mentioned in all of her albums, but i may wrong). The Cadilac in "Ray's
Dad's" is where the kids from school made love for the first time while maybe checking
out some old hits coming from the radio. That's in NRH. In TI's "Sex Kills" the same
car is owned by someone who believes in "just ice" and the scene in the song begins
with Joni pulling up behind that cadilac while caught in the red light and waiting for
the green.
Those are just 3 examples but there are more.

I liked what you wrote a lot, but i don't think that Joni has any love in her heart
for the nuns in the song. "Why do they call this place our lady of charity" and other
lyrics in the song make it abvious that the real holy ones in that place are the "bad
girls".

The song is a fine example of Joni being an actor and playing a character. One thing i
just had to say about the song is that the present time in it is the day Peg Oconnell
died and that's when the girl that's telling the story decides to let it be heard. No
bells were ringing for Peg, but strange as it may seem, when the "woman i knew just
drowned herself" (Song For Sharon) died - the phone kept ringing all day long.
