We went to see Jonatha Brooke at the Belly Up Tavern in San Diego (Solana Beach, to be exact) last night. The good news for Jonatha is that the concert sold out; but the bad news for us concert-goers was that there was very limited seating and we stood the whole time. Ah -- not to worry. I would have stood another five hours if she'd have sung. She was just fabulous, and I urge any of you who like her music to get thee to her concert! Her voice was flawless, acoustic guitar was stupendously gorgeous (I'm not sure what she plays), band is great, she's loaded with energy and funny patter. She's like a pixie with that cute little face and dimples. She noted the last time she played the Belly Up, Jewel was her warm-up. Ha! Jonatha buries her as far as I'm concerned.
She had good news to report (I have mixed feelings about it), that she wrote a song for an upcoming sequel to Peter Pan and that after that Disney contacted her to do a song for their upcoming sequel to Dumbo. She was quite aflutter about being summoned by Disney and felt they would chuck her out and go with Elton John or Phil Collins, but they said, no, we want you to do it. I just wonder where this leads her career, I mean all this fraternization with animated children's movies. Kind of steers the public's perception away from serious artist, I think. She didn't say she would sing either song, so I wonder if Disney hires perhaps a more juvenile voice to do the singing. She did two encores at the crowd's insistence and said she would then be available for 'selling crap' and autographs in the back (the warm-up band had made an allusion to their 'selling their crap' in the back). Unfortunately, we couldn't stay although I'd brought my camera and a CD for her to sign. Alas, babysitter issues. Also, that afternoon she'd visited with the radio station here promoting her music and concert (and where I first heard her, sitting in my car at the grocery story, chin dropped to the steering wheel at her amazing song "Secrets and Lies" from 10 Cent Wings) and did an on-air interview and sang. Darn! I only caught the last five minutes of it! I hope to hear from others who've seen her, and really, just go! Lindsay
