Colin, you might be interested in reading the book Ashara mentioned. I am a novice on this subject other than what I have read or experienced myself but I think anyone who believes as you said, "what happens to us in this life is retribution/compensation for previous lives." hasn't really educated themselves & is just using pop psychology so to speak. Exploring past lives is far more complicated, deeper & interesting than that.
