Hi Brenda:

I hear what you are saying, but at the same time, I don't really think I was
overstating when I wrote about rap being full of misogynistic lyrics. And
you are so right that other genres are guilty of this. Blues and some
heavy-metal come to mind. These forms of music are just a tad more subtle
though.

Yes,when I visit my sister and her family who live in the burbs, my ears are
often assaulted because her boys a lot of the times have rap blaring from
the basement. Women are called bitches and "hoes" and the message is, after
all these years, that women are here for one reason and that our sole
purpose and reason for existence is to service a man,to please a
man.(Clinton and Monica in the oval office comes to mind) I pointed Mike in
this direction because rap is so unabashedly in your face,so out there,no
hidden meanings ....... Why my sister allows them to listen to this garbage
is beyond me!!?? The boys know when they come to my house and when they
want to listen to something on my equipment, rap is forbidden. The boys
think that I'm very prudish now, whereas I use to be their coolest Aunt.
But I stand my ground on this one.

And I understand too, that rap addresses the social ills in the black
community:Driving while black, police brutality and many other things. (I
kid my nephews about their worst problem is figuring which over- the
counter- acne medication to buy. (A cruel joke,I know) Anyhoo,I just don't
like them listening to it. And if they were my sons they wouldn't, at least
not in my house, but my hands are tied.
