Another thing to remember is that internet signals (including email) don't travel in "straight lines", ie. depending on where you are in the world, a message may travel through many different nodes and get redirected many times. If any of these connections are disabled or not running properly for some reason, there will be a delay while another connection is found, or until that connection is fixed. Hell
