Brends, thanks for chiming in on this topic. Just adding a few comments to
yours....I apologize to those of you who are sick of this topic...scroll on

>>>Record companies do not get paid by radio stations for airplay.<<<

Instead they pay radio stations (through a third party) for radio play.
Marketing dollars which I imagine get charged back to the artists account.

>>>>There is no sound recording royalty for that performance. However,
internet streams will have to pay a sound recording royalty.<<<

Which is a total travesty.

>>>This whole argument about artist development is a fallacy.<<<<

Absolutely, it is amazing that they are still using this argument when the
practice is long gone. They want hitmakers right out of the gate.

>>>I really can't say that I know any artists who are happy with their
labels except maybe
one or two independents.<<<

I can't say I know any either. There are some decent independent labels out
there though...often working on behalf of the artist on the distribution
level more than the producing level. I think it is Dar Williams (a
successful indie) who has just that kind of deal.

>>>The label is in many ways a bank (or really, a hard money lender)
offering artists an uncollateralized loan.<<<

Exactly & so many young artists still don't get that its a LOAN. That the
record companies are spending the artists money. There is still so much
illusion out there about getting a record deal.
