Hmm. But maybe she started the craze? Remember when she had a hit with "I
Know I'll Never Love This Way Again" in the late 70s or early 80s? Could that
have been the beginning of ubiquitous melisma-ing?
Also, Whitney's "I Will Always Love You" makes me want to dive head first
into the nearest wood chipper. I once had a severe panic attack in a Hallmark
store when that song was blaring over the PA. I couldn't get out of there
fast enough! I'd love to know what Dolly Parton (who wrote the song) really
thinks of Whitney's version.
