Oooo, that's a sore subject with most Southern Californians! We have had
many offshore for a number of years but especially after the oil spill that
Kate mentioned, any new ones since have been fought against. That spill was
really devastating to the offshore islands and sea life. We have so much
pollution running off into the ocean already from having millions of people
living right next to the shore, that we don't need to add to it! When I was
growing up, the fishing was wonderful and you could there were lots of
little lobsters and abalone right on the shore. They all disappeared as
waste pollution killed off the kelp beds. The kelp beds have been restored
but one still hears that no one should eat the fish they catch unless it
came from 100 miles offshore. It's a very fragile situation.
