I was ready to unearth all my old Nicolette Larson and Linda vinyls when I got home! It was so amazing - both she and Kenny Edwards just kind of drifted over to talk to us like we were casually hanging at a Jonifest ;-) I am utterly exhausted after three incredible days of music running around with Julius and the gang! But it feels wonderful! Saturday night we got together with Coyote Rick, Brad and Clark and saw the Jazz Crusaders (Joni's original jazz collborators) in Hollywood. Wilton Felder and Wayne Henderson are the only originals left and we were hoping Joe Sample or Larry Carlton might drop in but they did have Bobby Lyles on keys and 3 other incredible musicians backing them up. They blew us away on an extended version of Eleanor Rigby, Put It Where You Want It, Chain Reaction and Street Life (at which point we all fell out of our chairs - one of our collective favorite songs. Last night I took Julius to The Joint (where Hell and I rocked out last summer) and it was hopping! This is the little dive where Waddy Wachtel, Jack Tempchin, Bernard Fowler, Phil Jones and Terry Reid play every Monday and where there is usually a surprise guest or two. We heard a rumor that Keith Richards (!) might be showing up but it was not to be. But then Johnny Rivers showed and did a couple of his newer songs. I was hoping for Secret Agent Man or Summer Rain but was told by one of the regulars that I'd hear it eventually if I kept showing up on Mondays. Heard Neil Young recently showed there, too. Bernard Fowler is beyond awesome. He has been a back-up vocalist with the Stones for 20 years but I am convinced he IS the energy of the Stones at this point! Thanks to Julius for the great company sharing the music - we have to go back Jack and do it again soon ;-) Kakki NP: Johnny Rivers - Live at Union Station NYC 8/11/83 - Summer Rain (thanks to Scott for this coincidently showing up in my mail yesterday!)
