Vince, I love your posts. They are always so thoughtful and
thought-provoking, and you seem like such a caring and sweet individual.

I know I am often guilty of "dissin" the kids' music - I annoy my teenaged
son immensely when he waxes estatic about the greatness of Radiohead and I
just roll my eyes and hand him a Pink Floyd album. (Radiohead may indeed be
great, but to me they just sound like next generation Pink Floyd.)

But you are not completely whacked out - my most recent CD purchases include
Linkin Park and POD - of course, they were for my 12 year old daughter :) I
agree wholeheartedly about POD's socially concious lyrics - "Youth of a
Nation" is heart wrenching - and I was pleasantly surprised when my daughter
asked for the CD. A while back my son had a flirtation with Christian rock
music, and I was vaguely familiar with POD from that genre, so I was
surprised to hear them on the "alternative rock" radio. Even though they're
playing with the big dogs now, they seem to have held on to their principles
and values, and I say good for them.

There are some others out there that are socially concious - System of a
Down, Rage Against the Machine to name 2 very high profile groups among the
young'ns. While this brand of hybrid rap/rock/metal music may sound like so
much noise to our middle aged ears, it certainly catches the attention of
the young, and I for one am glad to see some positive messages. Maybe while
they're moshing and crowd surfing some of these kids will get their
conciousnesses raised just a bit, and they won't even feel the pain.

Sybil
