Regarding Carly's song in which she talks about James telling her of meeting "some child" on the beach, and telling her later that she was a bore, you might want to listen to his lyrics in "Love Has Brought Me Around" from Mudslide Slim, circa 1971:
Don't come to me with your sorrows anymore I don't need to know how bad your feeling today. I declare I've had my share and I've heard it all before. It's time for me to be stealing away... Miss November (Joni's BD is 11/7) I detect a frown Close your eyes, and turn it upside down... That song may give insight into why Joni and James parted ways. Maybe he was looking for someone more easy to be with on a day to day basis. Joni herself said in FTR, "When you dig down deep, you lose good sleep and it makes you heavy company." I also believe that song (LIS)was directed to James. In No Secrets, Carly says he said she was a bore, but then she goes on to indicate some doubt: "Although I know you say that it's me that you adore, sometimes I wish that I never heard some of those secrets of yours." Like James still loved Joni, but could not deal with all her "questions and hypes" and saw Carly as a positive person that he could rest his mind with. All supposition, of course. ///Ruthie
