Thanks Warren! For going to all the trouble to find that. Not to spread
more rumours, but I've always imagined that "Coyote" was at least partially
about Neil Young. Maybe I saw this in the line that goes : "......while
your up early on your ranch. You'll be brushing out a brood mare's tail,
while the sun is ascending......" knowing that Neil has a ranch.

Not that I want to gossip, but I have a sort of runaway imagination, and I
like to look for patterns and connect the dots. Especially, when you find
references from other artists from the same time period and can put a
picture together. I just used to imagine that Joni purposely stuck that
line "my vain darling" in her song to reference the same person in Carly's
song. It seems so fitting, but we may never know. Thanks for everyone's
insights and for sharing those additional lyrics from Carly and James!

Mia

hi guys ! i found the quote referring to joni and warren. i too have the
book by leonore
fleischer mentioned in sylvia's post, oddly enough the quote i found
actually
mentions said book as it source. the quote is in brian hinton's book " joni
mitchell: both sides now." the quote is on page 138, the last paragraph:

"in leonore fleischer's book, affairs are hinted at - never confirmed -
with
steven stills, leonard cohen, neil young, and warren beatty, who is rumored
to be the inspiration for mitchell's ' coyote,' as he was for carly simon's
'you're so vain.'

i promised a quote and by god a quote you will get. although it isn't
exactly
proof it is confirmation that it probably is so ? ( and that's the truth !)

feeling dirty and cheap after having passed on that rumour,
warren keith
