Some random ideas::::
Play the tape on a different VCR and see if it does the same thing.

Some VCRs allow you to switch between hifi sound and linear
audio tracks.
Maybe the noise is on one and not the other.

The picture is okay, and does not jump when the popping noises
happen?

You cannot clean a VHS tape. You can insert a cleaning tape
into the machine and see if that helps, but if the noise is in the
same place on the tape every time, the problem is with the tape.

It's possible that the tape was placed near a magnetic field; on
a speaker or TV, which could cause some erasure.

You could have worn it out if you played it alot, like a hundred
times. Or if you left it on 'pause' for too long. Last resort, you
may have to buy another one, or record it if TRIO shows it again.
