I have no facts to add to this thread although I've really enjoyed the 
discussion.  I just wanted to say that aesthetically speaking, my favorite 
part of that song is that arpeggiated chord she plays on the piano the 
measure before she sings "She tapes her regrets to the microphone stand..."  
Sometimes Joni will just pull out this little piece of wonderful out of 
nowhere, somekind of strange modulating chord that is just beautiful, and I 
think this is one of those spots.  Another great modulation I like from her 
is in "Blue" right before she sings "Everybody's saying that Hell's the 
hippest way to go out..."  Just gorgeous.
