Subject: Raya O. Coal concert - sjc

I had the good fortune to be able to attend Raya O. Coal's CD presentation concert at
Unplugged in Vienna's 9th District Wednesday night. Formerly known as Ramona Kasheer,
Raya O. Coal (vocals, guitars, accordion) appeared with her new band - Robin Gillard
on drums, Juergen Mitterlehner on saxophones, Toni Burger on violin and mandolin, and
Reinhard Ziegerhofer on bass - with guest appearances from Thomas Uhegbu on keyboard
and Michael Steindl on flute.

The concert was wonderful. Raya is very captivating - her beautiful melodies, unusual
chord changes, and surprising rhythms are an outward expression of her deep warmth and
humor. It is so hard to describe her music because it is such a wild mixture of
influences not only from one song to another, but also sometimes even within one song.
In one moment it is a folk ballad and in the next it is jazz, in another moment you
could imagine you are being serenaded by a gypsy songbird, and the next moment you are
in an African chanting session. I feel like somehow she is expanding the boundaries of
musical possibility.

During the concert, one of her songs sequed into Big Yellow Taxi, and for the encore,
she sang Twisted with Reinhard on bass, and instead of singing "instead of one head...
I've got two" she sang "instead of two names... I've got two... " which made everyone
laugh.

I've been listening to her CD, Cut All The Strings, for the last two days. I love all
the music on it - like Joni's songs, these are songs that I can play again and again
and not tire of them, songs I want to sing along with, songs that run through my head
without the help of the CD player. Raya wanted to include a version of Woodstock on
her CD, but there were some hangups with getting permission. Hopefully it will appear
on a later CD.

I highly recommend her music to all JMDL members. She really is a very talented artist
who could use your support. I am sure you will be extremely glad if you take my advice
and go to the trouble to order her CD. You can find out about how to order it from her

I'll add my "yep" to these two comments. Joni in person was not at all what
I expected. She did not look like her pictures. She appeared much softer,
smaller, and gentler, a lighter presence than I imagined she'd be. It was
very much like meeting a different person than the one I'd seen in pictures.
And she was very pretty.

A week or so ago, I alluded to a Joni compilation CD I had made for my sister Chris as
a thank-you gift. (She had helped me in locating/burning some covers, and had
commented on how much she enjoyed the songs).

Anyway, I e-mailed her yesterday to make sure she had gotten it, she said she did and
that she liked it a lot. She then went on to say that this week a co-worker (at
Beacham-Smith-Kline) came up to her all stressed out. Chris gave her the Joni CD and
told her to listen to it and it would help. When the co-worker returned it, she was
all better! :~)

Subject: Webcasting rates announced...RIP Internet Radio? (NJC)

The new rates were announced this week. Although the amount was cut in half, it is
still based on per stream, per listener and not a % of revenue. It's likely that most
internet broadcasters will have to shut down and we'll be left with AOL Music or
something like it.

Reps. Boucher and Inslee have issued a joint press release saying that the rates are
unfair.

http://www.house.gov/boucher/docs/Inslee_Carp.htm

You can find the rates here:
http://www.copyright.gov/carp/webcasting_rates_final.html

I'll certainly report any updates on grass roots action being taken (for anyone
interested in joining the fight).

Subject: Misquoting a genius, 100% JC

In a trade periodical called "R&R" (formerly known
'Radio & Records'), the November 23, 2001 issue had an
interview with Bernie Barker. He's the Market Manager
at WMSP-AM, WNZZ-AM, WLWI-AM & FM, WHHY-FM, WMXS-FM, &
WXFX-FM. Yeah he's an industry 'wheel' but he *don't
know jack* about Joni.

R&R asked Mr. Barker: "How did the events of September
11 affect you?"

He replied:
"It reminds me of a song, 'You Don't Know What You've
Got (Until You Lose It).' Sept 11 made it clear that,
while we are an all-powerful nation, the parts that
make up the whole are very fragile. But the fragile
nature makes us protective, and that's what makes us
strong. Like a splash of cold water in the face, Sept
11 was a wakeup call. Also, it reminded me of what an
important role our medium plays. Radio rallied to the
occasion on September 11, and it continues to do so
today."

In fairness to Bernie, it looks like the R&R writer
and / or editor interpreted Bernie's mangled quote as
if it was a title but we all know it's not a title.
It's possible that Bernie gave them the first bit and
the editor incorrectly added the sub-title, making him
look silly. I want to believe he knows better cause
he picked Pink Floyd's "The Wall" as his favorite
album of all time. Anyone who comprehends Roger
Waters is okay in my book.

Joni's 'catdancing' video for Dancing Clown is one of the videos on the "Come In From
the Cold" compilation release. Out of print, you can find copies on E-Bay, or maybe
one of us JMDL-types can make you a copy for blanks/postage or such.

Joni has said, I believe, that she has the sort of face that can look glamorous or
homely in photos, depending on whatever. Up close, in person (the one time I

He may have been talking about the John Lennon song "What
You Got" from "Walls and Bridges". This line is repeated
3 times during the chorus section.

That would be a statement that I agree with --

global warming - it exists, but he'll do nothing.

terrorism warnings? in his mandated reduced briefings, too little
attention was paid when he was more concerned with Enron and not
revbealing how Enron was dictating our energy policy.

the economy? From surplus to deficit and huge deficits that don't need
to be and looking for more tax cuts and lying about the cost of
re-organization of government - he can't even be honest about how much
that will cost, andwhile we all reciognise the need to do some
reorganization, why can't Bush tell the truth? And why did he reject
working with Congress when Congreew first proposed this, instead of
springing out a plan that had no consultation and input from anyone
outside the inner circle?

A nuclear treaty that doesn't eliminate any weapons, not a one, but only
stores them - what a pr spin job on that.

I can't stand to watch him on tv. He disseminates and mis-states so
often his staff is always later announcing that desite whatbthe frat boy
said, what the real policy of the US is - which does change day to day
anyway.

I remember Bush ridiculing Clinton for Clintion's shooting a missile at
bin laden and missing bin laden by mere minutes when bin laden left his
dwelling early - how Bush mocked Clinton for incompetence. Well, Mr We
Will Get Him Dead or Alive, in 9 months you never got as close as
Clinton. That makes Bush 9 times as incompetent, doesn't it? But then,
Bush mocked Clintoin for even going after bin Laden, which Clintin did
about the same time that Bush's father and others were meeting with
other (non terrorist) bin Ladens on business.

oh, Relayer, you shouldn't have got me started... glad you did.
