Wow, that's really a shocker. His work on Quadrophenia may be the best recorded electric bass ever. If you haven't ever just listened to the bass on some of those songs, do so and prepare to be amazed. Not just fast for the sake of playing fast, but always with a purpose. And he was a talented writer & vocalist too, as has been pointed out.
