1973: Joni performs in Kona, Hawaii

1990: The concert "Roger Water's The Wall : Live In Berlin" was held today and
included guest singers and musicians such as Sinead O'Connor, Van Morrison, Cyndi
Lauper, Bryan Adams, Paul Carrack of Mike and the Mechanics, the Band, the Scorpions,
etc.

In the spring an invitation came from Roger Waters to join him in a re-staging of his
epic "The Wall" at the site of the now torn down Berlin wall. Roger suggested a song
to Joni that he wanted her to perform in the upcoming concert, but she told him she'd
prefer to do a different one. He agreed and re-arranged the line-up of singers and
songs to accommodate her. Joni also requested that she be sent a tape of the backing
tracks so she could practice.

Joni was joined onstage by flutist James Galway, performing with a pre-recorded
backing track on the song "Goodbye, Blue Sky." She also re-appeared at the finale and
sang a few solo lines for "The Tide Is Turning" clustered with Sinead O'Connor, Thomas
Dolby and Bryan Adams at one side of an elevated platform.

I heard this just last week and she really pulls it off! In her hands,
it reads like an Olde Worlde folk song and it really fits the lyric
well. The story is about a woman as well, so Ms. Parton brings a
sisterhood-sympatico to it that really works. Any excuse to hear that
voice. She really has it.

How do we know that the lady who's sure all that glitters is gold
DOESN'T have a coat of many colors?

i for one think lots of respect is due to dolly. i always rated her a
highly talented performer who sang a lot of cruddy music to make money. now
shes getting older, and presumably made enough money shes starting to
express herself a bit more. (tho i really do think her cover of "peace
train" was, to say the least, woeful..)

as far as ladysmith black mambazo are concerned, they are imho one of the
greatest acapella groups in the world. im hoping to get to their 42nd
anniversary concert in about 2 weeks time - theyve been around a while.

ladysmith is the town in which they formed, black is fairly self
explanatory, and mambazo is a type of spear traditionally used by the zulu
nation.

i was watching a interview with joseph shabalala, the founder of lmb
recently. he was a normal musician, playing guitar, pennywhistle etc, &
struggling to survive. then one night he had a dream in which he saw a
choir singing in a strange language, in a strange style which he had never
heard before. he woke up, put together a choir (mainly his brothers),
taught them to sing as he heard in his dream, and the rest was history.

lmb has long been the most successful group in soujth africa, selling
millions of records, which is noo small accomplishment in such a small
market.

i also enjoyed shabalalas account of his meeting with paul simon. he says
this small, shy polite man, who, believe it or not, hed never heard of,
walked up to him, and said "Hi, im Paul Simon, maybe we can work together".
Shabalala took one look at this man, saw him as being full of light and
music, and said "we will work together!!" - the result was graceland..

Subject: ANNOUNCEMENT: UK Jonifest 2002

Eeeek. I've just realised that the original mail about
UK Jonifest 2002 (or "Old England Jonifest 2002" :)
didn't go to the list as a whole, for a variety
of reasons. With a scant two weeks to go, I'm
rectifying that!

So, if anyone in the UK was unaware of the impending
get-together, and wants in on the deal, drop me an
e-mail pronto!

Dates: Friday 2nd August -> (sometime on) Sunday 4th.
Ashara, queen of 'fests, will be gracing us with her
presence on the 2nd, which gives us all reason to be
cheerful and/or take the day off work.

Location: Swavesey, Cambridgeshire. Halfway between
Cambridge and Huntingdon.

I need to know:-

o When you'll be arriving
Friday - late morning
Friday - evening
Saturday - late morning
Saturday - late afternoon/evening
(This helps me figure out how many I'm
catering for at each mealtime.)
o Dietary requirements
o Whether you can find a place to stay (i.e.
friends in the locality) or if you
need numbers for local accomodation.
Floor space has gone, I'm afraid.
o Whether you want to get up and play some songs at
some point.

I propose to buy all of the food and *some* booze in advance,
so plan to extort money from each of you on arrival.
Probably without menaces though :) Once I know who's coming
when, and for how long, I'll try and set a fair price. I
hope that's OK, but I can't afford to pay for everything
myself, and it all gets a bit disorganised when everyone's
bringing food.

Cheers!

Went to see Vanilla Fudge at the Pony last night. Do you remember these guys?
Three of the original band members are still together. They did haunting
psychedelic covers of "Eleanor Rigby" and "Keep Me Hanging On"! I just got a
personal invite to be backstage for the Commerce Bank gig the end of this
month.

Hey, all

Anyone else see the mention of JM in the TV Guide? Interview with Jimmy
Buffet -- when asked who influenced his songwriting style, he said "Joni
Mitchell". Well, that's one that escaped me.

"Willy is my child
He is my father
Now he wants top run away
ans hide in margaritaville
looking for his lost shaker of salt..."

Nah.

But seriously, anybody know of their ever meeting? -- coulda happened, I
guess.

Hope all is well with everyone, and looking forward to the fest,

Walt

Yeah, and I suppose Jesus Christ taught him how to fish!

I like Jimmy Buffet the person a lot more than I like Jimmy Buffet the
performer, but I can't for the life of me see what Joni's influence could
have been.

Speaking of people who claim to have been influenced by Joni, last weekend on
Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update segment, Tina Fay said something like,
"Note to Alanis Morrisette: Not everything you write in your diary is song
material." Ouch!

Lucky You!! Was Carmine Appice on drums? The last I heard about him he
was drumming for Rod Stewart in his "hot legs" days.

Darn right. The title is misleading. Didn't watch it myself for the first
four years, even though have seen most of the episodes now in repeats, but
once did so was hooked. Has humour, drama, poignancy, love, introspection,
etc. So well written. So well directed. It makes me laugh, laugh, laugh,
and cry. Makes me think, wish, long for, ---
The entire cast is superb. Remember Sunshine from Little Darlings, the one
that punched the icky girl and it was so surprising yet so wonderful? She
is there and all grown up. Parker is outstanding to say the least. And Kim
Cattrall. My goodness.

I just forwarded yours and Walt's post to my best friend who is die-hard
parrot head. She thinks Jimmy is a poet of all poets! I don't get it,
but....I tried, she used to play me his stuff years ago...I found his stuff
mundane, uninspiring....cliche-ridden.....tiresome....it put me to sleep.
Oh well, we all can't love Joni. We used to do dueling vinyl's.. she'd play
Mr..Parrot Head and I'd play Joan.....I say now listen to this....THIS IS A
SONG!! Then she'd put a cut of his on to try to counter Joni. Needless to
say....we ended up not converting each other.

Bree...

happy still that I "get" Joni.

Yeah, well the thing that has been impressing me lately is that by the
time Hejira was released, everyone in North America had made up their
individual mind about Joni Mitchell. To most, she was a 4-hit wonder, a
has-been-hippie-chick-with-a-guitar who wasn't on the radio anymore. As
Marcel once pointed out, it's flat-out amazing that the same mind that
wrote "Nathan La Franeer" for guitar and voice, came up with "Amelia"
for a jazz combo.

I hope it inspires all of our songwriters, arrangers, and musicians.
Meaning our JMDL songwriters, arrangers, and musicians. Oh, yeah, it
should inspire our aspiring music critics too. (Ahem!)

Birds of a feather stick together, Bree. Better a crow head than a parrot
head any day!

Next time Joni tours -- and there *will* be a next time -- let's all get done
up in black crow outfits! You know, sorta like Bjork's famous swan get-up. We
could have tailgate parties in the paved parking lots of every venue she
performs at, with pink champagne, Rhine wine, omelets and stews, goat dancing
. . .

<< I found his stuff mundane, uninspiring....cliche-ridden.....tiresome....it

Other than that, did you like it? ;-)

I agree with you, Bree, although I think there is something likable about the
guy. I read his autobiography a couple of years ago -- someone thought it
would be a good birthday gift for me! -- and he has had an interesting life
and career. I suppose his concerts could be fun, considering all the alcohol
and whatnot that gets consumed . . . but zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
