Roger suggested a song to Joni that he wanted her to perform in the upcoming concert, but she told him she'd prefer to do a different one. He agreed and re-arranged the line-up of singers and songs to accommodate her. Joni also requested that she be sent a tape of the backing tracks so she could practice. Joni was joined onstage by flutist James Galway, performing with a pre-recorded backing track on the song "Goodbye, Blue Sky." She also re-appeared at the finale and sang a few solo lines for "The Tide Is Turning" clustered with Sinead O'Connor, Thomas Dolby and Bryan Adams at one side of an elevated platform. In her hands, it reads like an Olde Worlde folk song and it really fits the lyric well. The story is about a woman as well, so Ms. Parton brings a sisterhood-sympatico to it that really works. Any excuse to hear that voice. She really has it. How do we know that the lady who's sure all that glitters is gold DOESN'T have a coat of many colors? (tho i really do think her cover of "peace train" was, to say the least, woeful..) as far as ladysmith black mambazo are concerned, they are imho one of the greatest acapella groups in the world. im hoping to get to their 42nd anniversary concert in about 2 weeks time - theyve been around a while. ladysmith is the town in which they formed, black is fairly self explanatory, and mambazo is a type of spear traditionally used by the zulu nation. i was watching a interview with joseph shabalala, the founder of lmb recently. he was a normal musician, playing guitar, pennywhistle etc, & struggling to survive. then one night he had a dream in which he saw a choir singing in a strange language, in a strange style which he had never heard before. he woke up, put together a choir (mainly his brothers), taught them to sing as he heard in his dream, and the rest was history. lmb has long been the most successful group in soujth africa, selling millions of records, which is noo small accomplishment in such a small market. i also enjoyed shabalalas account of his meeting with paul simon. he says this small, shy polite man, who, believe it or not, hed never heard of, walked up to him, and said "Hi, im Paul Simon, maybe we can work together". I've just realised that the original mail about UK Jonifest 2002 (or "Old England Jonifest 2002" :) didn't go to the list as a whole, for a variety of reasons. With a scant two weeks to go, I'm rectifying that! So, if anyone in the UK was unaware of the impending get-together, and wants in on the deal, drop me an e-mail pronto! Dates: Friday 2nd August -> (sometime on) Sunday 4th. Ashara, queen of 'fests, will be gracing us with her presence on the 2nd, which gives us all reason to be cheerful and/or take the day off work. Location: Swavesey, Cambridgeshire. Halfway between Cambridge and Huntingdon. I need to know:- o When you'll be arriving Friday - late morning Friday - evening Saturday - late morning Saturday - late afternoon/evening (This helps me figure out how many I'm catering for at each mealtime.) o Dietary requirements o Whether you can find a place to stay (i.e. friends in the locality) or if you need numbers for local accomodation. Floor space has gone, I'm afraid. o Whether you want to get up and play some songs at some point. I propose to buy all of the food and *some* booze in advance, so plan to extort money from each of you on arrival. Probably without menaces though :) Once I know who's coming when, and for how long, I'll try and set a fair price. I hope that's OK, but I can't afford to pay for everything myself, and it all gets a bit disorganised when everyone's bringing food. To most, she was a 4-hit wonder, a has-been-hippie-chick-with-a-guitar who wasn't on the radio anymore. As Marcel once pointed out, it's flat-out amazing that the same mind that wrote "Nathan La Franeer" for guitar and voice, came up with "Amelia" for a jazz combo. I hope it inspires all of our songwriters, arrangers, and musicians. Meaning our JMDL songwriters, arrangers, and musicians. Oh, yeah, it should inspire our aspiring music critics too. (Ahem!)
