I also really like the Crows cover of BYT. I'm a casual fan of Counting Crows, but my son is devoted, so he had the new album at 7:00 the morning it was released. Since he really liked the BYT cover as well, I was curious how other loyal CC fans felt about it.
Sooo, I hopped on their website and checked out the message boards. Sure enough there was a lot of conversation - mostly along the lines of "what is that song?" One person even claimed it was a cover of an Amy Grant original!! I started to refer them to Bob's excellent database of covers, but I refrained. Then I ran across this crazy girl ranting about how Adam Duritz had totally subverted Joni's song by changing the lyrics and completely altering the meaning of the song. HUH? I didn't remember any drastic lyrical changes, except to alter gender where appropriate. But this girl insists that Duritz changed the song from a politically aware song about the ecology to a silly love song. HUH? Joni? Overtly political? Did I miss a meeting? Then a couple days ago Adam Duritz posted a new diary entry - apparently he actually reads the message boards. He took off on this particular thread - he was stumped as to what she was talking about as well. He goes on to wax eloquent about Joni's genius as a songwriter. Restored my faith in my own ability to interpret a song at least. Check it out at the website - countingcrows.com.
