Last year, between 8 and 9 a.m. e.s.t., I was driving
to work, listening to music on a CD. I never listen to
the news when I'm driving.

I was getting pissed off by the traffic congestion and
how slowly the cars were moving and upset I was
probably going to be late for work.

Finally arrived at work, the first thing one of my
co-workers said was, "Did you hear what happened?" A
plane - a big one - had crashed into the World Trade
Centre in New York. My mind started turning this whole
thing over - how could that have happened? Why are
planes flying in that area, so close to all those big
buildings? How can a plane crash into a building? If
they're going to crash, they usually crash on
take-off. They usually crash into the ocean or into
fields in the country - they don't crash into
buildings in large cities. Was there a bomb in the
plane - did someone blow it up? Even so, what was it
doing in the place at that time?

All the radios in the office were turned on and more
details started coming in. It all started making
sense, in a weird and unthinkable way that I never
would have dreamed of in my wildest imaginings.

We live not too far (as the plane flies) from the
Toronto (Pearson) Airport. Lots of planes fly over
day and night. There are still times when I see or
hear a plane and it doesn't sound "normal" to me, it
sounds noisier than it should, and i have to look up
and try to convince myself, it's just a plane, it's
just circling for a landing, or it has just taken off.
It's OK.

September 11.
