Yael (Kate), I feel like a total idiot, because I
don't know for sure (Mags, help me out here before you
forget where you came from!), but I don't think we're
called "Dominion of" anymore, ever since we
repatriated our constitution in 1982 (which means we
no longer have to apply to the British Parliament for
amendments (to the constitution)). (In other words,
we're no longer under the dominion of British
Parliament). Our national holiday, July 1, used to be
called Dominion Day - it dates back to 1867 when
Canada was created as a country unto itself under the
British North America Act (see? America!) However,
when we repatriated the BNAA, we renamed it the
Constitution Act, and we now call July 1 "Canada Day".
The name "Dominion" was a very popular one for
businesses of all kinds, most notably a chain of
grocery stores in Quebec and Ontario. (The other kind
of name you see all the time for companies is Adanac,
which is Canada backwards of course - some people have
*such* imaginations when it comes to naming things - I
can't help but think of Wile E. Coyote and Acme
whenever I see that one!)
