I think the truth is somewhere in the middle.  As far as my recollection 
does, Downbeat's extravagantly positively review of Mingus was a minority 
opinion. I recall a lot of reviews that were cautiously positive, with some 
reservations.  Howerver, Mingus **certainly** wasn't "vilified." And on a 
related note, for the sake of the JMDL newcomers, please be aware that, 
despite Joni's frequent assertion,  Rolling Stone did NOT name HOSL as 
worst album of the year!

Joni has not had an easy life or an easy career, but I think she makes it 
worse for herself with these negative -- and distorted -- 
recollections.  I've occasionally fantasized about tabulating all her rave 
reviews over the years and sending her the results with a little note 
telling her to stop griping!
