I wonder if a non-American can make a brief
reflection?

Way back in the early 1970s your wise and inspiring
poet Gary Snyder, who has often stated his preference
for defining place by natural boundaries, suggested
the delightful name Turtle Island for your continent,
a name "based on many creation myths of the people who
have been living here for millenia, and reapplied by
some of them to 'North America' in recent years". [See
his best known book of poetry, Turtle Island, which
won the Pulitzer Prize in 1975.]

A nice idea I think.
