I'm watching Jay Leno's Tonight Show and one of the guests is Goldie Hawn. Conversation turns to discussion of the early days of her career, when she was a dancer and erstwhile singer.
It's a set-up though, as Jay soon surprises her by pulling out an album Goldie recorded, circa 1971. He goes on to say how he was gonna play some of it on the show to embarrass her, but that he actually found it pretty good. He said he chose his favorite track from the album to play tonight, that Joni Mitchell song, "Carey." Then he plays the song... Hmmm. She infused it with a bit of a country groove. Not too shabby. You go, Goldie. Hawn went on to tell the story of how she used to sing "Carey" at bedtime to her son, Wyatt, when he was around 3.. And how he had learned all the lyrics and sang along. And how he wanted to know what the lyrics "oh, you're a mean old daddy but I like you" meant. It was a cute story. I've always thought Goldie was a sweetheart. Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling to know she's an ardent admirer of Joni, like me. -Julius
