<<So I was wondering if anyone out there has enjoyed their other 3 releases.... It seems that they got really "pop" sounding...is this a fair judgement?>>
Their debut was certainly a strong one, Erica...one of THE best releases of the 90's for me anyway. And it happens that a band gets together and writes & tours and hones their material and then releases that first LP which represents the best of what they've done. And when it's a hit like August, the pressure is on for the follow-up, and they don't have the luxury of time like they did the first time 'round. That being said, I thought 'Recovering The Satellites' was an excellent follow-up. "Another Horsedreamer's Blues" might be my favorite song from them, period. Was not as crazy about all of 'This Desert Life', but still some excellent tracks on there, "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby" at the top of the heap. (But you have to understand, I love Duritz' voice, so I'm an easy sell for these guys). Which brings us to the latest 'Hard Candy' which is a close second to August as being their best to date. Really rocks in their melodic style, the band is tight, and hey it's worth it just for their cover of Big Yellow Taxi! As to your second question - I don't see as they have drastically changed their style much over the course of their 4 studio records, so if you think of them as pop now, then that's what they've been from the start. Plus, they're very creative and kickin' live!
