Thanks for a blast from my chubby, checkered past, Vince!
For some reason, the Chubby Checker lyrics are the ones I remember Freddy and
the Dreamers singing. (Those are the lyrics I quoted in my initial post.) For
JMDLers who aren't as old as dirt, Chubby Checker was famous for introducing
The Twist to the world. (C'mon, baby, let's do the twist . . .)
My friend Wendy (Yes, Jimmy, that's really her name!) and I were driving back
from New Hampshire tonight and we were listening to a classic rock station.
They played "Master Jack" and I stunned myself and Wendy by knowing every
single word of that insipid song, right down to the final, "You're a very
strange man, aren't you, Master Jack." This led to conversations about such
classics as "Come a Little Bit Closer" by Jay and the Americans" (There's
that word again!) and "I've Never Been to Me" plus "Fooled Around and Fell in
Love."
Then I broke the news to Wendy that I had read in today's Parade magazine
that Lulu has a 25 year-old son who was going to play Prince WIlliam in a TV
show tonight. (Talk about dragging your feet to slow those circles down . .
.) Anyway, Lulu's baby is named Jordan Frieda and he is her son by a man
named John Frieda. I said I was surprised by that because I always thought
Lulu married one of the BeeGees, and Wendy said I was nuts. (Some news
flash!) Anyway, as most people of a certain age in the US know, Lulu was -- I
think -- a two-hit wonder, with "To Sir With Love" and "Oh Me, Oh My," which
are both great slow-dance songs, by the way. But I think she has had a longer
and much more sucessful career in the UK.
So my question to the list is: Did Lulu ever marry one of the BeeGees, or did
I actually overdose at some point during the 60s and 70s?
Thanks,
