OK, so last month I took a break from releasing a CD in the ever burgeoning
"covers/frisbee" series. Now it's time to get back onthe track, although I
must admit it's a bit intimidating what with all the competition: Pazfest,
Big Yellow Taxi, Steve Klink, the 8-CD Jonifest 2002 collection...but here
goes - here's the lineup for "Joni Covers - Volume 33". A big thanks to our
one and only Kerry (get out your cane) Nikkuta for her assistance in
getting this music!

1. The University of Northern Colorado Vocal Jazz Ensemble - I Don't Know
Where I Stand: Whew! As Linda Lovelace says, that's a mouthful! And it
sounds good too...basically their take on the Singers Unlimited
arrangement. See also #12 below.

2. Suzin Skyler - A Case Of You: Canadian Jazz singer Skyler turns in a
fine performance of ACOY.

3. Mary Hopkin - Both Sides Now: The second Joni cover from a rare live
recording, Mary's voice is well suited to Joni's material.

4. Chuck Mitchell - The Circle Game: Joni's ex sings the classic. Dontcha
just know she loved getting THIS royalty check!

5. Ginger Berglund - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: GREAT big-band
arrangement, really swings.

6. The Loons - The Urge For Going: Another wonderful recording of one of
Joni's earliest songs, by folk group The Loons. Jody Johnson gives it 2
thumbs way up! :~)

7. Skeeter Davis - Both Sides Now: Skeeter was of course most well-known
for the hit "The End Of The World", her BSN is not outstanding but not bad.

8. The Joint Chiefs - All I Want: Now THIS is one I really love! Don't know
much about these guys, except that they remind me a lot of Eddie From Ohio.
Great harmonies and acoustic arrangements!

9. Rachel & Hugh Higgins - Big Yellow Taxi: Hugh would have done well to
take the advice about not working with kids...but then again it's sort of
cute as he sings this one with his "trusty sidekick" Rachel.

10. CC Robin - Free Man In Paris: I have no proof that the Grateful Dead
ever did a Joni song in concert, but this one sounds like Jerry Garcia and
there are Dead-like harmonies here as well.

11. Lincoln Mayorga - Both Sides Now: A very peppy and well-played version,
and some interesting things going on with the arrangement. Definitely a
nice change of pace.

12. Shivesen Jazz Choir - I Don't Know Where I Stand: See #1

13. John Townsend - The Circle Game: UK folksinger with a fairly monotone
version of Circle Game...I like this one though, it's darker than I'm used
to hearing.

14. Keller Williams - A Case Of You
15. Keller Williams - For Free: These are both WONDERFUL recordings - and
not officially released, so we have yet another JMDL exclusive. Don't know
much about Williams, but he does have a new CD out.

16. Dick Hyman - Both Sides Now: I promise not to make fun of his
name...for those of you who are clamoring to hear BSN on the bagpipes, this
is what it might sound like. Dick doesn't play the pipes, this is a far-out
synth version that imitates the sound. Really different, and fun!

17. Steve LaManna - Michael From Mountains: A nice solo piano version of
one of Joni's sweetest melodies. The guy's no Fred Simon, but he's all
right.

18. Melanie Taylor - River: A fine & soulful version of the Christmas (?)
classic.

19. Woody Mann & Suzanne Vogt - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: Another
winner, Woody plays a mean acoustic lead, great jazz licks and solos, and
Suzanne provides a warm and accurate vocal.

20. Terry Baxter & Orchestra - Both Sides Now: I always cringe when I see
that "& Orchestra" tagged on, but this one is pretty cool. Nice & upbeat,
with some nice Vince Guaraldi keyboards.

So there you have it! 20 tracks, 20 hits...as always, I'm happy to share
copies with anyone interested, so if you are...lemme know. And too, I'll be
giving away a copy to some lucky JMDL'er, so Murphy stay tuned - your
chance to win is coming up!

Bob
