How does the NZ$ compare to the US$? Just wondering
because, even though I often think we pay a *lot* for
CDs in Canada, by the time you figure out exchange
rates, we probably pay something equivalent to what
the Americans do. Most CDs I've seen in stores (not
doubles) cost around $20 Canadian, give or take a few
bucks.

I sometimes order from places like CDNow or Amazon
because there's more variety to be found there than in
most stores in Canada, even in a large city. By the
time you figure in exchange rates, taxes, shipping and
handling and other miscellaneous ripoffs, i probably
end up paying slightly more than I would pay for a CD
here in Toronto. The $30-some I've heard quoted for
the new double Joni probably works out to close to
$50. That's about what I paid for Jane Siberry's
double one (can't remember the name - Anthology?
whatever) but I ordered that from her website and so
had to pay about $5 for shipping and handling. I guess
if you like the music enough and you're likely to play
it more than once, it's a good deal - otherwise, it's
a shitload of money.

I'm appalled at how much people in the UK, New
Zealand, Australia & so on end up paying (because you
live on islands? could that be it?) so, when you look
at it that way, we shouldn't whine so much.
