In '83 (as a high school junior) I plunked down a pretty penny for a 5 disc, import vinyl set - "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George & Ira Gershwin Song Book," released by Polydor Paris. (As someone who has been a Sarah Vaughan fan since before I can remember, this was a big deal.) "Let's Call the Whole Thing Off," "The Man I Love" and "How Long Has This Been Going On" are worth the price of admission. This set was re-released a few years ago on CD with a fourth disc of alternate takes and mixes. Anyone have it? I bought the Ronstadt recordings later and found the performances fairly tame (and in some instances, downright dull) by comparison.
