In the article about Joni in the new "Rolilng Stone," as read from the
link in Wednesday's digest (I haven't bought a paper copy yet,) Joni credits
her old self with a three-octave vocal range. Here is a short list of vocal
ranges claimed by, or for, several other women that I've read of recently:

   Three octaves

Les Sampou (who just performed at the Delmarva Folk Festival)
    Bet Williams
A local/regional type who performed at one of a series of noontime
concerts last May in Denton, Md. (I didn't go).

    Four octaves

   Julia Fordham

   Seven octaves (!)

   Kate Bush

Who can add to this list? Feel free to add for men, also. Let's generally
stay with singer-songwriters; I'm not sure including, say, opera singers
would be useful.

   Tim Spong
   Dover, Del., U.S.A.
