If I faithfully, religiously, and even sometimes obediently read the lines (and often in between) of the JMDL posts, but only rehearse the dialogue in my head (Sheryl reinvented), am I a lurker? I sense there are others who come and go, always acknowledging their covert ways.
I admit it. I was forced out. One day synapses atwitter, next day sulking and skulking cause some feckless coward says he's 'disappointed' that Otis and Marlena has been chosen for Travelogue.
Sorry? Come again? Yet again, wearily, I must sit my son down and patiently explain that yes, opinions can be wrong. That tune blends sound and imagery so well I, uh, well, help me out here oh articulate zealots et al ... Load shooter comes to mind but I sense it's inappropriateness.
And before you even mention the difficulty of incorporating those bandit muslims into that sweet salve of a song, that tranquilizing tincture of a tune, that bewitching balm of a ballad ... be strong.
Remind yourself(ves) of Orpheus. The heavy-handed penalty which lack of faith may impose. She's had tougher nuts to crack...
So, speaking of Carly Simon (Orpheus, not cracked nuts), a member posed a question: Is there a song that Carly DIDN'T sing well?
Aah the rueful smile that plays on my face. The chorus of her version of Angel From Montgomery leapt so quickly to mind I near called you (him, her,...whatever). Speaking of cracked nuts.
And all this allusion to the tiredness of her artwork devices? Her need to get a life? Her lack of PR skills? Her redundant ranting regarding Rolling Stoners? If I was a halfway decent spitter, I'd let one fly.
At the ground I mean, I've always hated the imagery of spitting in someone's face. Her 'art' is what it is. I can't possibly match MaryanneRizzo's pithy post, so I'll simply repeat it. Play/say/and paint/and design/and give what you want.
Ok, it's not been all bad. I did like the description of live Cactus Tree creating waves that traveled up whomever's body, ending in some sort of sweet release... I may be extrapolating there, but that lovely lilt never fails to get my attention. By the way, what IS a magsnbrie? Something English?
And the nifty way you all agreed on how to teach your children. The initial post used 'instill', but subsequent follow-ups (oh Gilligan) championed 'exposure'. I agree, there is nothing like the moment when the fruit of your loins, only eight gentle years of age, able to sing every word to Coyote, phrasing intact, looks you straight in the eye and tells you he likes Britney. Shit, I've gone through more kids that way...
Stay calm, pause significantly, return his gaze, and say "I like her more".
Oh, and I need also to thank the Bobs of this world. I still don't know who is who but I find your posts informative and amusing. Left and right sort of. And whichever one of you is pursuing your inner Ethel, well, break a leg.
And though I know you're more savvy than I, sometimes you miss big.
Talk To Me's copyright is 1976 and 1977. Knowing she generally does the page and then the strings, Martha is clearly a reference to our once-upon-a-time first lady, given the celebratory nature of our nation back then.
Sheesh.
Fondly,
Jeff
