Stay Awake is really a great album. Producer Hal
Willner (the mucical director of Saturday Night Live)
did a few albums like this in the '80's. My other
favorite along with Stay Awake is Lost in the Stars,
which is interpretations of Kurt Weill's music. It has
Sting doing Mac the Knife, Lou Reed doing September
Song (sans melody), Marianne Faithfull with a
wonderful rendition of Ballad of the Soldier's Wife,
and the uncomparable Dagmar Krause doing Surabaya
Johnny, etc. An excellant record.
Willner also put together a collection of
interpretations of Nino Rota's music, and also one of
Mingus' music.

More recently, she was
heard
on the truly fabulous "Stay Awake", a collection of
newly recorded
versions
of songs from Disney films, which included Suzanne
Vega doing a
gorgeous
unaccompanied take on the title song, Los Lobos with a
rollicking I
Wanna Be
Like You, Bonnie Raitt with a sweet Baby Mine, Tom
Waits with a truly
bizarre
Heigh Ho, and Ringo Starr with a rendition of When You
Wish Upon A Star
which
would bring a smile to the most jaded soul.
