I took advantage of my free tickets to any show at the Grey Eagle and went to see the California Guitar Trio tonight. It was hands down an incredible, completely absorbing show. If Travelogue has beautiful, gorgeous orchestral sounds, these guys are the equivalent on the guitar. They are just brilliant. They are all former students of Robert Fripp (School for Crafty Guitarists) and from all over the world- Japan, Belgium, and Utah. This was their first trip to Asheville and there was a small yet very appreciative crowd.
Among other things...they played the entire 4th movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, YES Heart of the Sunrise, Rawhide, the entire Bohemian Rhapsody note for note, Forbidden Colors (from Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence) and many very cool original pieces. With their three guitars (Martins) they sounded fuller than many bands do. They end this tour tomorrow night in Atlanta at the Red Light Cafe though they will begin a Borders tour that will take them to Nashville, Cincinnati, Chicago among other places so keep an eye out for them. One of the most engrossing shows I have ever seen. Just walked out completely amazed and blown away.
