I suggest using a photograph as reference, rather than an artist's sketch - at least for the initial gathering of ideas for poses, etc.
My favourite photo of Joni is by Annie Leibowitz and is featured in her book "Women." Do you know the photo I mean? Does anyone have it or a link to it? It's the most statue-like photo I've seen of Joni. It's the older Joni seated on the edge of the fountain in her garden (very park-bench like) and she is staring off into the distance, looking quietly happy and thoughtful. The wind is blowing her hair back. She is wearing one of her favourite Issey Miyake gowns and, yes, she is smoking a cigarette! To me, it's the perfect pose, the perfect facial expression, the perfect mood. I imagine it would be a artist's dream to sculpt it, given the intricacies of line and form. I hope someone can find the photo online or scan it for others to see. I have a copy of it but it's too large to scan. -Andrew Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable.
