I think that if the purpose were to capture every aspect of Joni, then there would have to be a cigarette involved.
However, that sounds like trying to do too much. She will be remembered for her songwriting, her singing, her piano, guitar and dulcimer playing, her poetry, her painting (and her painful honesty). Can we leave one of them out ? Except for us fans, she will not be remembered at all for her smoking. Of her cover art, most does not depict her smoking - with Hejira a notable exception. Still, if she is smoking, she cannot be playing or singing very easily. My favorite picture of her is an early one playing the dulcimer - with a little girl with that wide wide open stare gazing up at her. I vote for that one - no need to design a new one. Design the seat in an arc, and leave some room on the other side for me to sit and stare too :-) Bob S.
