Wow John, that's a pretty cool concept. To really produce an
accurate, correctly-ordered list would take forever...so here's some
rambling "wish I could have been there" moments:

  3. The exact moment she figured out that chord progression to Hejira,
you know, that very first chord change.

You know Bob, as astoundingly beautiful as that chord change is, I bet it
was the first thing element of Hejira that gelled, and was one of the
easiest chord progressions to find. -Think about it, when Joni sets the
guitar in a new tunning, the first step is to find where the chords are.
(She mentioned that in some interview...) Anway, I imagine the first
chord is the open tunning itself, then the bar 5 and 7. After that, I
believe she puts her fingers into her favorite shape(s) and sliiiiiides
them down the neck of the guitar, looking for the colors. Well the
opening fingering of Hejira are pretty simple shapes and high on the
neck. So I can't help but feel she heard something there... especially
since she was after the sound of falling snow, so she must have been
picking across the fret board in a rhythm and those two chords must have
REALLY stood out.

I believe the opening chords in Hejira to be one of the most beautiful
chord/ melodic progressions ever.

Anyone else have an "Origin of Hejira" theory???? Maybe we should ask her
the next time one of us sees her. Or at least ask about "Don't Interrupt
the Sorrow".
