Besides being VERY listenable with great melodic rockers, Steve is a great lyricist and like you say is definitely NOT afraid to take on the tough subjects. A nice antidote to all the jingoistic Toby Keith that gets shoved in my face here in SC. Another excellent 2002 release that no one has mentioned in their roundups is "Going Driftless: A Tribute to Greg Brown" that is just SO superb, and how could it not be with the likes of Ani, Shawn, Lucinda, Iris, Gillian, Ferron...the list goes on.
