I had the same reaction as you about Travelogue's dirgelike nature, especially after hearing Amelia. Her vocal deterioration doesn't really bother me so much-I like the huskiness from the smoke-but the diminished capacity to sustain a note or sing a lengthy phrase without breaking it up into smaller chunks is bothersome, and serves to heighten the dirgelike quality. Still, there are standout cuts sprinkled throughout, and I'm always thrilled to hear whatever it is that Joni's been working on. I just don't find myself playing Travelogue very often.
