Another piece of important advice:

When you're putting your skis on for the very first time, make sure you're
standing on a flat area of snow. On no account put them on if you're
standing on a slope, especially if you're facing UP the hill. It can be
VERY embarassing - not that I know from person experience, or anything.....

I've been in snow twice in my entire life (the second earlier this year, in
fact), and only once have I attempted skiing - on my first encounter with
the white cold stuff on a University hostel trip many years ago. It was
fun, but to be perfectly honest, I had a lot more fun once my friend and I
had put our skis to one side. We made a snowman, pelted little kids with
snowballs (and got more than our fair share back) and had a lovely hot
chocolate while watching other people make fools of themselves!
