A bit more about Sweet Sucker Dance...like I said, I spun Mingus again this morning, paying particular attention to SSD. Even if you find the jazz melody inaccessible, the quality of Joni's vocal instrument is almost beyond belief. Pure singing. What further amazed me is that she gets virtually no instrumental "clues" from the band to play off of - she has to make those jazz intervals vocally on her own. It's not just walking without a net, it's like walking without a f*cking wire! And the result remains hands down for me Joni's finest hour vocally.
