O.K. Chris
here goes. YES!
the 2-part CBC program "The Life and Times of Joni Mitchell: Woman of Heart and Mind"
was produced at WNET-TV/13 by the production staff of the PBS Series "American Masters" under the direction of executive producer Susan Lacy and IS (essentially) the same program that will be broadcast PBS on April 2, 2003.
earlier today i spoke with Erika Frankel, Associate Producer, and learned that there's one short segment featuring "Come In From The Cold" that is not in the Canadian edit although it will be in the "American Masters" version.
two seperate Broadcast Masters have been delivered to the CBC. each is 42 Min. in length and divided into 4 acts, per their broadcast requirements. each 'Act' being a seperate segment with a fade in/fade out where commercials will be inserted.
and yes, that means 18 minutes of commercials per 1 hr. broadcast.
the final PBS' version of "WOMAN OF HEART And MIND" version will be broadcast as 90-Minute program and runs 84 minutes without the opening/closing credits and other announcements.
the final On-Line Video was 'locked' last friday and the final audio mixing is taking place this week.
the DVD release will contain somewhere between 6 and 10 minutes of additional "documentary programing" although No decision has been made yet about any other additional ExtraS.
meetings are scheduled tomorrow regarding the DVD release.
i'm told that this could be ready and available as early as may.
in all likelihood the program being offered for sale on the CBC WebSite IS the DVD release. (available May 20, 2003?) http://cbc.ca/lifeandtimes/
RE: the Alison Anders "TRAVELOGUE" film.
it's not yet complete.
therefore no viewings are currently scheduled. it's
also not clear where it will eventually be shown although
i expect a Video/DVD release. my understanding is that further Interview Segments will
be filmed ... at Joni's request.

Doug,
Yes and No.
as stated above, "WOMAN OF HEART And MIND" is an 84 min. documentary film that will be broadcast within a 90 min. window.
for most of last summer and fall, the 'working title' was "Busy Being Free".
that's the title used on the (12-30-02) 58 min. edit screened for Joni when she stopped by the WNET-TV studios while she was in NYC to present the "Alfred Stieglitz Award for Creative Amateur Photography" to Graham Nash at an event that took place at Sotheby's Auction House on January 9th.
several of us thought that title was itself a little busy.
it was shortened to "Being Free" by the time of the (1-16-03) 42 min. edit prepared as Part 1 for the CBC.
shortly after this, based on one of Joni's interview segments, "CHORDS OF INQUIRY" became the working title and was used on the (1-31-03) 86 min. edit i had a chance to view recently.
but that didn't last long either.
FWIW: two comments from the documentary
JAMES TAYLOR:
Joni invented everything about her music, including
how to tune the guitar. from the beginning of the
process of writing it, she's building the canvas as
well as putting the paint on it. JONI:
for years everyone said "Joni's weird chords - Joni's
weird chords, and I thought "how can there be a weird
chord?" chords are depictions of emotions - these chords
that I was getting by twisting the knobs on the guitar
until I could get these chords that I heard inside that
- that suited me. they feel like my feelings. y'know? I call them, not knowing, Chords Of Inquiry.
they have question mark in them." there were so many unresolved things in me that
those chords suited me and y'know? and like I'd
stay in unresolved emotionality for days and days ...WHAT GOES AROUND ...
eventually it came back to the original title suggested by Co-Producer Joel Bernstein "WOMAN OF HEART And MIND".
let me tell you folks ... You're in for a REAL TREAT.
"Woman Of Heart And Mind" is a most Excellent film.
it does Joni proud and she's clearly please and satisfied with the results.
and THAT's no mean feat, given her current state of mind.
for now ~ take care.

... here they come, where are they going?
