interesting article- the only thing i winced at was that they edited out
(given the time constraints but oh why not make it longer!) l. cohen's
influence on joni's writing (i think cohen was one so influential) but it
sounds like the released version was much improved & i can't wait to see
it...

Hello Deb
What could be offensive about what you suggest ?????
As a non-believer who would be quite happy to have something more to believe
in, this is where all religion falls down, the inflexibility, the
intolerence, the closed shop mentality, you will be welcomed into any
religion as long as you toe the line, but if you rock the boat or ask
awkward
questions and you will be as welcome as a fart in a diving suit. Some
people
might take offence, but God ! She would just laugh !

I watched and taped part 1 of "Joni Mitchell - a woman
of heart and mind" on CBC tonight. I don't think any
of you will be disappointed. This is a very tastefully
done look at our Joan, featuring much music and lots
of lovely images, both still shots and film. It also
includes interviews with James Taylor, Graham Nash,
David Crosby, David Geffen and Elliot Roberts, as well
as Joan herself.

Is there anything in it that the really fan doesn't
already know? Probably not. I for one had never seen
Joni's wedding pictures from her brief marriage to
Chuck Mitchell, but I'm sure some of you have. And
there were some recordings played of early Joni solo,
as well as with Chuck - again, things some of you
probably have in your collections, but not this
lister.

I video-recorded it here at home and also realized I
could videotape it at the TV I have at work (sometimes
I'm such an eejit that never occurred to me until
today when I was looking at the little TV on my desk,
realizing it had a VCR built into it, so I headed down
to the drugstore downstairs and picked up a
videocassette.

It's very obvious the love the interviewees have for
Joni still, especially Graham Nash. It made me wish
things had worked out for them, as it's very evident
how madly in love with her he was. If the only problem
was competition for who would get to the piano first,
then I'm sure they could have figured that one out
quickly; still I totally get Joni's point about her
frustrated poet/artist grandmothers and why she didn't
want to get into a relationship that might make her
want to kick the door down.

I'm looking forward to part 2 next week and once
again, I don't think any of you will be disappointed
when this shows up on PBS in a bit less than a month.

I hadn't seen these either and what really stung my heart was her revelation
that as she was walking down the isle "laden with daisies" she was thinking
about how she could get out of the marriage. There was a lot of bitterness
towards Chuck in this documentary with Joni admitting she felt betrayed by
him.

Speaking of Carole Pope, she's going to be playing at
Hugh's Room in Toronto in the next little while. I
wonder if she'll sing any Joni songs?

Piano or computer? Every now and then, one of my goofy
cats climbs onto the (piano) electronic keyboard and
manages to turn it on and play spooky cat music on it.
I haven't caught one of them on the computer keyboard
yet, but who knows - they're probably e-mailing their
friends when there's no people at home.

Apparently Joni vetoed the first film. The article is a little too long to
reprint here.

Saw part one tonght. Great footage of Joni's classic early songs and Laurel
Canyon days. Joni talks briefly about her breakup with Graham Nash. This
film
is very much about her music career, not so much a story of her life.
Poetic and lyrical are two words that would describe it.

Oh my, that was so fine.

This hour is all about the Joni I fell in love with in 1968. As a matter of
fact there is a segment shown from the first time I saw her--a black and
white CBC presentation where she plays Circle Game and fingers a chord with
her index finger over the top of the neck.

There's wonderful home movie footage both of her growing up and after she
moves to California, as well as pictures from her wedding to Chuck (no love
lost there, as Catherine has pointed out). Plus short clips of Joni singing
in her folk club days and performing "Blues in the Bottle" with Chuck (I get
the feeling that she was the draw in that duo: the performance was pretty
standard folk fare except for the fact that Joni's voice was so divine.)

My eyes got kinda misty a few times, watching clips of Joni swaying in the
long velvet dresses she wore at all of the concerts I got to see in the late
60's. Did I mention I was so in love with her? For about 20 years?

Interesting though that the first hour brings us only up to about 1970. That
leaves one hour to span from 1970 to today.

What I want now is to have access to all the footage and sound files that
they used to compile this portrait. I must have it!!!!

This is definitely a "no warts" portrait but that's the way I like my Joni
best.

Rick, rewinding as we speak.

my new performing songwriter magazine came today...

an interview with larry klein (who mentions joni several times of course, in
addition to others he's worked with) & ends with this very hopeful
statement: "so i'm trying to finish that body of work and then possibly
another record with julia, and joni and i have been talking about some
things"

!!!!! woohoo!!!!

another interview with rosanne cash where at the top of her essential
listening list is joni mitchell's 'blue'

& under new music reviews, ben taylor gets an A- while lucinda williams gets
an A+...saying she has surpassed her two previous releases...can't wait for
this one (due out in early april)

this mag is on the web- i'm not sure if you can read the klein article there
or not

crosby is legendary & i am pretty sure he can be largely credited with

You have my sympathies, believe me. The good old Vera Duckworth/Jerry Lewis
system strikes again! And Kenya is second only to Australia on points going
into the Super Six? No one could have predicted that! And then they got
annihilated by West Indies (who didn't even make the Super Six) in their
last game, just to confuse people even more!

I think this World Cup is becoming more of a lottery by the second. I still
hope we win, though ;o)!

Ridiculous. They apparently have blanked out their minds from reading
context and are reacting to something that had nothing to do with the theme
of the book being discussed and an appropriate quote from the Amazon review.
