quite striking. The Laurel Canyon had indeed a powerful flavor bordering once in a while on the precious . . .but that's California. In '73 or so I was at Joel Bernstein's house there checking out his Joni collection . . . at one point she's working on a song and laughs at herself: "I can't compose it like that!" that is, with the tape rolling it felt too cerebral. Also soon after she mocks a phrase she did: "It sounds like Van Morrison!"
Crosby astute and either checked or had edited out some of his more caustic impressions of JM esp regarding Graham, his buddy that she jilted. Both of those guys retain an awestruck respect for her.
