As others have been chipping in with their Olympic impressions, I must doff
my cap to Denise Lewis, winner of the Heptathlon, who's not only a great
athlete but a lovely person. Fair warmed the cockles of my heart to see her
grinning from ear to ear on the podium.

There's so much bullshit around the Olympics (the pomposity and airs and
graces of the committee, the rampant commercialism, etc), but I still feel
moved, sometimes almost to tears, to see an individual realise their dream
and stand on the podium. The kind of joy on the face of the Japanese woman
who won the marathon is a pretty powerful antidote to cynicism.
