Well, socks are decidedly unglamorous and while pantyhose can look OK on the 
finished product, it's just not the same as stockings. Especially if you have 
the control top, secret panel, energizing, matrix minimizer, sheer to the toe 
style.

Stockings seem to be a favorite metaphor for her that conjures up a facade 
behind which all is not what it seems. (which is, of course, the nature of 
facades)

She also likes to use the moon as a symbol of what impossible thing can be 
achieved versus what cannot be done, "Don't Interrupt the Sorrow" with "...we 
walked on the moon, you be polite." or "Willie" with "...he stood looking 
through the lace at the face of the conquered 
moon." 

I was going to pull out some more favorite metaphors, but Bob made me 
remember that I have to go out and buy pantyhose for tomorrow night, so I've 
been sitting here pondering about that instead.
