There is no reason in the world why I should like the song "If," by Bread, as
much as I have grown to. I know it's not the nostalgia factor because I hated
the song when it was a hit and for years I couldn't change the radio station
fast enough whenever it came on. From the insipid lyrics to the gimmicky
waa-waa-waa-waa-waa trippy effect, the song is pure crap. But somehow, in my
dotage, it comforts me . . .
How about the rest of you? Is there a crappy song you admit to liking or even
loving? A song that you like for absolutely no good reason (such as
nostalgia)? C'mon, we all know you have good taste in music or you'd be on
another discussion list . . . let's hear about the crap you secretly think is
just great.
As for Madonna's "Music," I've only heard the title track and I love it. But
I like it for what it is -- dance music, which is a category that I think
most people bring different kinds of expectations to. And even people who
*hate* dance music can eventually encounter a dance song that gets under
their skin and produces a powerful need to listen to the song very loudly
about a thousand times in a row. When Cher's "Believe" was a hit, I was in a
record store with a friend who walked up to a salesperson and said, "I never
thought these words would leave my lips, but do you have the new Cher CD?"
