Mark, An excellent post!! You make a very good point. Many of us who sing well but are not necessarily the best writers feel very inadequate about not being able to do both. It's as if we don't deserve to be in the business. I thank you for your comments and agree that one has be an excellent interpreter of song in order as well. Sarah Vaughn was one of the best. I also love Judy Collins and Joan Baez who did the same. I was able to know the writer of the song "Joe Hill," sung by Joan, when I was a 17 year-old green horn in LA back in 1975. The writer's name was Earl Robinson. It was explained to me how speaking about the Union back in those days could cost you your life. When I hear Joan sing the song, I felt she expresses the thoughts of the writer in a very real way. Joan is an excellent writer as well, but I feel her forte' is interpreting the songs of others.
